JTole Summer Jazz Workshop
The JTole Summer Workshop educates and inspires young people to be confident, creative and expressive individuals through jazz music. Students new to jazz (and even new to their instruments), as well as the most experienced high school jazz musicians, will make great strides in the two-week session. All students will be introduced to improvisation, practice techniques, jazz repertoire, theory and ensemble playing by renowned jazz musicians and experienced educators. Students will also have opportunities to perform and showcase their work in performances and concerts.
The workshop will conclude with all groups playing in the Roselle Park Jazz Festival along with special guests. No audition is needed. Beginner track is for students with at least a year of playing experience.

Regional Essentially Ellington
Saturday, April 13, 2019
Newark Academy is pleased to partner with Jazz at Lincoln Center to bring the internationally acclaimed Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Program to Livingston, New Jersey. Our festival has grown in both reach and experience. In addition to dozens of jazz bands from the tristate area, we welcome schools from West Virginia, California and even Canada to a day filled with performances, clinics and a jam session. Awards and summer camp scholarships will be presented to outstanding soloists, performers, and sections.
Each band will perform a 20-minute set and receive a post-performance workshop. Several section and improvisation clinics will run throughout the day for students and directors. Other activities include:
- Student jam session
- Directors round table luncheon
- Vendor alley where students and directors can try instruments and purchase jazz recordings
Recent artist-clinicians have included Steve Turre, Terell Stafford, Jeremy Pelt, Justin DiCioccio, Abraham Burton, Mark Gross, Jimmy Greene and Freddie Hendrix, to name a few. We are also proud to have many of the leading university jazz programs and high school jazz programs that have participated in the festival, including William Paterson University, Rutgers University, Montclair State University, Rowan University, Jersey City University, Skidmore College, and the New Jersey Youth Symphony Jazz Program. This year our JALC Clinicians will be drummer Jerome Jennings and educator Scott Brown, with others to be announced. Please email jtolentino@newarka.edu for more information.
